Treatment for hepatitis B aims to control the virus and it is usually needed long term.
In some people with hepatitis B the virus is controlled by their own immune system.
Because of this not all people who have Hepatitis B require treatment.
Testing for hepatitis is usually the only way to know if you have it or not. Hepatitis generally does not make you feel unwell until your liver is very damaged.
If you have hepatitis; monitoring of your liver function and virus activity will allow your doctor to know if you need treatment.
If you have hepatitis B, your baby would have received the first dose of hepatitis B vaccine at the maternity ward at birth.
The following vaccines at 1, 2 and 12 months are usually given by your GP.
